What We Do

The Writing Revolution is an educational nonprofit committed to ensuring that all students develop the writing skills essential for success in school, the workplace, and life. Founded in 2014 and grounded in the work of Dr. Judith Hochman, the organization empowers educators to deliver explicit writing instruction through the Hochman Method—a proven approach that transforms writing across all grades and subjects.

Training: Through a partnership with the Arkansas Department of Education, TWR trained more than 3,500 educators across the state this year.

Teachers report dramatic increases in confidence from the start to the end of training—an early indicator tied to later gains in student outcomes. With districts now beginning to embed TWR strategies into core curriculum and assessment practices, Arkansas represents an ambitious and promising statewide implementation. District-Level Excellence, Statewide Results: The Impact of TWR in MCS and Louisiana

Since 2017, The Writing Revolution and Monroe City Schools (MCS) have partnered to transform writing instruction—elevating MCS from a “D” to a “B” district and helping share Louisiana's revised ELA Guidebooks for grades 3-5, which were launched statewide in 2022 with TWR strategies embedded.

Former Chief Academic Officer Serena White, now TWR’s Director of Partnerships, initiated TWR training and began overseeing districtwide implementation. This work contributed to Louisiana becoming the only state in the nation in 2024 to show post-pandemic reading gains. Today, with nearly 4,000 TWR-trained educators in Louisiana, MCS and TWR are leading a literacy movement grounded in equity, excellence, and explicit writing instruction.

Independent Validation of Student Outcomes: NORC Research & Key Findings

An independent evaluation by NORC at the University of Chicago confirmed that The Writing Revolution is driving meaningful academic gains in Monroe City Schools (MCS), a TWR partner since 2017. Schools with full TWR implementation and a “Revolutionary” teacher, an educator responsible for embedding TWR strategies into the curriculum, saw statistically significant improvements in student writing, with some grades outperforming all comparable district schools.

A New Era of Innovation: Successful Launch of MyTWR Hub

After a year of strategic planning and product development with global learning-technology leader, NIIT, TWR launched MyTWR Hub this July. It is our most significant innovation to date. The Hub is a comprehensive digital platform designed to scale high-quality writing instruction with consistency and flexibility. It expands educators’ access to the Hochman Method through:

Self-Paced Training

Flexible, asynchronous modules that allow educators to learn at their own pace while building the knowledge and confidence needed to implement the Hochman Method effectively.

MyTWR Tools

A centralized library of instructional resources aligned to commonly taught topics and texts—expanding access to materials that support daily classroom use.

Judy, My AI Activity Generator & Coach

Named after our founder, Dr. Judith Hochman, Judy is a breakthrough AI-enabled instructional tool that helps teachers:

  • Generate accurate, TWR-aligned writing activities
  • Embed writing practice directly into content across subjects
  • Receive real-time coaching and instructional guidance aligned to science of learning practices
  • Differentiate for diverse learners

In its first five months, educators have created more than 140,000 activities using Judy.

Award Recognition for Judy

In early December, The Writing Revolution and NIIT—a global leader in technology-enabled learning and our partner in developing Judy, TWR’s AI activity generator and coach—were honored with six Brandon Hall EdTech Excellence Awards, including five Gold and one Silver, for our collaborative work bringing Judy to life. These prestigious awards recognize Judy as an innovative, high-quality instructional tool and highlight the strength of the partnership that helped shape it. We are grateful for NIIT’s commitment to our shared vision and thrilled to see Judy receive national recognition so soon after its launch.

Expanding Access Through the Abrahamson Scholarship Fund

Established in 2021 by Kathleen and Ernest Abrahamson, the Abrahamson Scholarship continues to remove financial barriers for educators in under-resourced schools and districts.

The Fund remains essential to our goal of reaching 1 million educators by 2030, ensuring cost is never a barrier to high-quality writing instruction.

As awareness grows, applications have risen sharply:

  • FY24 - 365 applications
  • FY25 - 1,010 applications
    • Scholars come from 20 different US states and 3 countries: Tanzania, New Zealand, and Indonesia

Looking Ahead

Working towards our mission to empower educators, TWR will invest in the following key areas to sustain and scale our progress:

  • Enhancing Judy’s capabilities to deliver more personalized, high-impact support for educators
  • Evaluating implementation progress and researching student outcomes
  • Scaling the Abrahamson Scholarship Program to meet demand
  • Securing funding and strengthening state- and district-wide partnership
